(1863 – 1932)
Mr. Haynes was a prominent businessman in the Village of Poland when he was elected to the Board. He operated two general stores with the company name of Cover and Haynes.
Calvin Haynes grew up on a farm in Boardman and attended Poland Union Seminary. In 1872 his father began managing the general store at the corner of College and Main Streets and continued in the mercantile business until his death in 1898. It was then that Calvin gave up farming and went into partnership with Alonzo Cover, then proprietor of a grocery store in a building on Main Street facing Cortland Street and now occupied by the “The Village Pantry”. By 1906 the two men were operating a grocery store at College Street and a department store in the “Brick Store” opposite the old Bank. The Brick Store was torn down when the Withers Plaza was sold and the Riverside Condos were built.
Mr. Haynes married 24 year old Eva Marshall in 1885. They had one child named Hazel, who later became Mrs. Clyde Calvin. Eva died in 1902 and Mr. Haynes then married Lydia Kennedy, a daughter of Abraham Kennedy.
The Youngstown Vindicator carried his obituary on January 18, 1932. It stated that Mr. Haynes was active in various Masonic Lodges and resided at 3940 Wickcliffe Blvd. (now Mahoning Ave.) It also mentioned that Mr. Haynes was at one time a member of the Poland District Board of Education. We can assume he worked closely with his brother-in-law, Martin A. Kimmel.
Mr. Calvin T. Haynes served on the Cemetery Board until 1928. He is buried in Lot 112 just west of the McNabb Mausoleum. His wife, Lydia, died in 1947 at the age of 80.
